Biological Controls:
Hope on the Horizon

Researchers across Hawaii are exploring every possible biological path to defeat the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB).
They’re testing multiple fungal and viral agents, searching for even stronger natural enemies, and working with scientists throughout the Pacific to identify sustainable, environmentally balanced solutions. Their mission is nothing less than to find the most effective, island-safe biological tools to protect Hawaii’s palms and ecosystems for the long term.

Biocontrol represents the most promising sustainable path forward, offering a long-term alternative to heavy chemical use. Yet until these agents are officially approved and deployed, the island’s defense depends on prevention, sanitation, early detection, and active community participation.

When an effective biological control becomes available, Hawaii’s approach can shift from constant emergency response to long-term maintenance — but success will rely on all of us continuing to manage green waste responsibly, monitor palms, and share accurate information.
